New York
Bethpage State Park, located in Farmingdale, New York, is home to five exceptional 18-hole golf courses, with the legendary Black Course standing out as one of the most challenging and revered public courses in the world. Designed by the renowned architect A.W. Tillinghast, the Black Course opened in 1936 and has since hosted multiple U.S. Opens, the PGA Championship, and the Ryder Cup, solidifying its status as a championship-caliber venue accessible to all. The design philosophy behind the Black Course emphasizes a formidable test of golf, characterized by narrow fairways, deep bunkers, and thick fescue rough. Tillinghast's masterful layout demands precision, strategic thinking, and powerful ball-striking from tee to green. Its iconic warning sign at the first tee, declaring it a "difficult course which we recommend only for highly skilled golfers," perfectly encapsulates the challenge that awaits. Playing the Bethpage Black Course is an unforgettable experience, offering golfers a rare opportunity to walk in the footsteps of legends on a major championship track. Despite its public access, the course maintains immaculate conditions, providing a true professional golf experience. The dramatic elevation changes, strategically placed hazards, and the sheer length of the course ensure that every shot is critical, making it a bucket-list destination for serious golfers worldwide.
